ABOUT

Hi, I'm Josh.

I'm a software engineer in Los Angeles. I like finding out how things work and why stories land the way they do, and this page is the part of me the résumé leaves out.

Systems and narrative

For as long as I can remember I've been fascinated by two things: how systems work, and how stories get told. Put them together and you get Dungeons & Dragons, which is a story run by a rulebook. It's also how I ended up developing video games.

I took that seriously in college. I developed video games, won IEEE GameSIG, and served as president of the Role Playing Games club.

Stories are something I make, too. I'm a creative writer, and these days I'm trying my hand at poetry.

That same interest runs through the patented AI game engine I co-invented.

About the patent

Away from the keyboard

When the laptop closes, there's usually something loud, small, plastic or on a screen waiting for me.

  • Film club

I run a film club, and the lineup comes straight from people I meet who swear I have to see something. That's how Shrek 2 and Meshes of the Afternoon ended up on the same list, and honestly, both belong there.

  • Music

As a teenager I was in a lot of garage punk, ska and metal bands, a combination that pretty much guarantees a loud garage. These days I'm learning Ableton so I can start producing my own music, and it turns out a laptop can make plenty of noise too.

  • Fixing electronics

I like fixing electronics, mostly for friends: broken phones, musical instruments, that kind of thing. It's light soldering, nothing like rebuilding motherboards. I just like opening things up to see how they work and, with any luck, keeping them out of the landfill.

  • 3D printing

I also do some 3D printing, because one hobby involving something very hot apparently wasn't enough. Mostly I print my own designs, made to fix things around the house that I can't buy.
